Shared decision making in pregnancy in inflammatory bowel disease: design of a patient orientated decision aid

Abstract Background Research has indicated a lack of disease-specific reproductive knowledge among patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and this been associated increased “voluntary childlessness”. Furthermore, may contribute to inappropriate medication changes during or after pregnancy. Decision aids have shown support decision making in pregnancy as well multiple other chronic diseases. A published aid for IBD not identified, despite the benefit pre-conception counselling patient desire tool. This study aimed develop test feasibility encompassing decisions setting IBD. Methods The International Patient Aid Standards were implemented development Pregnancy (PIDA). multi-disciplinary steering committee was formed. clinician focus groups conducted explore themes importance decision-making processes PIDA prototype designed; interviews obtain further insight into perspectives feasibility. Results Issues considered clinicians encountering regarding included fertility, conception timing, inheritance, medications, infant health, impact surgery, contraception, nutrition breastfeeding. Emphasis placed on provision preconception early disease course. Decisions relating medications chosen current PIDA, however content inclusion broad use across preconception, post-partum phases. Favourable constructive user feedback received. Conclusions novel supported by initial testing.
